Food and Nutrition at Kids Korner Childcare Centre
| The Centre will provide food based on menus, and food and nutrition education, that are consistent with national dietary guidelines for children and national infant feeding guidelines, state regulations, food safety principles, and that are appropriate to the age, cultural background, religious or medical needs of all children attending the centre. Nutrition in childhood influences growth, activity, intellectual and emotional development. Children in long day care may receive 50-80% of their food intake whilst in care. Whilst the overall nutrition of the child remains a parental responsibility, it is essential that a child care centre provides adequate nutrition proportionate to the time spent in care. Food attitudes and habits are established very early in life. Poor nutrition has been linked to diseases such as obesity, heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Several studies of young Australian children have shown that a significant percentage have high blood fats, high blood pressure, constipation and other problems which could lead to these diseases. Nutrition influences the health and therefore the work of child care workers. A child care centre has a unique opportunity to develop good food attitudes and practices through example and teaching.
